Research and Teaching Interests:
Professor Ghonem is the director of the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory at the University of Rhode Island and has authored over 200 publications in fatigue crack propagation, creep-environment-fatigue damage interactions, durability and damage tolerance in metals, alloys, superalloys and fiber reinforced metal matrix composites at elevated temperatures. He has been invited to give lectures in his research areas in both USA and Europe. His funded research has been sponsored by government and industrial agencies including USAF Office of Scientific Research, NASA Lewis, National Research Council of Canada, Titanium International Corporation, SNECMA (France), United Technologies, Association of American Railroads and Canadian Pacific. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of mechanics, mechanics of composites, micromechanics, fatigue and fracture mechanics and theory of plasticity.
